Why I Wrote This Book
I have spent my career inside the Missouri criminal justice system, first as an associate and now as the managing partner of my own firm, and I have watched the same pattern play out again and again. People walk into the system with no idea how it actually works, and that gap in understanding gets used against them.
Most people learn about criminal law from television, and television gets almost everything wrong. The real system runs on procedure, discretion, and leverage, and the people who understand those forces have a real advantage over the people who do not. I wrote this book because that advantage should not belong only to lawyers and insiders.
This is not a legal treatise, and it is not written for other attorneys. It is written for the client sitting across the table from me for the first time, for the parent trying to understand what is happening to their son or daughter, and for anyone who believes that understanding the system is the first step toward improving it. My hope is that this book gives readers the clarity to make better decisions if they ever face a charge, and the knowledge to push for a fairer system if they do not.
